DIAMOND BEACH

The glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón is located right next to Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier. The lagoon develops naturally from the water that melts from the glacier; it gets bigger every year as large blocks of ice crumble from the shrinking glacier. The black sand section is covered by compact translucent ice that is thousands of years old and sparkles like diamonds in the sun.
As it grows in size, the lake becomes more impressive, but at the expense of the neighbouring glacier - here the effects of global warming are clearly visible. But this makes the lagoon and the glacier tongue even more special: Due to the constant changes in the Icelandic landscape, the lake looks different every hour.
